GTS successfully organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) Scientific Session on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s Disease and Dystonia on 7th February 2026 at Hotel Intercity, Muscat, Oman.

The event brought together leading neurologists, neurosurgeons, and healthcare professionals from across Oman, fostering academic exchange on advanced movement disorder therapies.

The scientific session opened with Dr. Mahmood Khalifa Al Hinani, Consultant Neurologist, Khoula Hospital, Muscat, who delivered a presentation titled “DBS in Oman: Present Progress and Future Promise.” He highlighted the current status of DBS services in the Sultanate and outlined future opportunities for expanding advanced neurological care.

This was followed by an expert lecture from Prof. Dr. Roopam Borgohain, Senior Consultant Neurologist and Director, Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Research Centre, Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City, Hyderabad, on “Long-Term Outcomes of DBS in Parkinson’s Disease.” His presentation focused on clinical outcomes, patient selection, and long-term management strategies.

The next presentation was delivered by Dr. Rajesh Alugolu, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and Clinical Director, Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Research Centre, Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City, Hyderabad, on “DBS for Dystonia.” He discussed surgical approaches, clinical benefits, and advancements in DBS technology for dystonia management.

An interactive discussion session followed, with participation from senior consultants and dignitaries from the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Khoula Hospital and Royal Hospital, Oman, encouraging collaborative dialogue and knowledge sharing.

The organizers expressed special appreciation to Dr. Taha Al Lawati, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology, for successfully conducting and moderating the scientific sessions.

The CME concluded with a collective commitment to develop a structured Deep Brain Stimulation program in Oman, through collaboration between the expert teams of Khoula Hospital and Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad. The initiative will focus on training of clinicians, multidisciplinary case discussions, and knowledge exchange, aiming to deliver world-class DBS treatment and improved outcomes for patients in Oman.
