Sparsh Hospital, Bengaluru, India, in association with Muscat Family Physicians' Group and Global Treatment Service organised an International Medical Conference on Breast Cancer and Updates in Obstetrics and Gynaecology on January 12 in Muscat.

In her opening speech Dr Aliya bint Yousuf bin Abdullah al Madhaniyah of Royal Hospital, welcomed and briefed the audience about the difficult and complicated cases they face in their department and how they handle them.

Dr Prathima Reddy, director of Sparsh Hospital for Women and Children, spoke about the different kinds of cases her team treats. Dr Reddy also spoke about a rare case of Intravenous Leiomyomatosis which the team had managed successfully. She elaborated on how several complicated and life-threatening conditions in Obstetrics have been managed by her team.

Dr Mansi Khanderia, lead consultant, medical oncology, spoke on recent advances in the treatment of breast cancer, the commonest cancer in the world, with 1 in 8 women developing breast cancer. There is an alarming rise, a new case being diagnosed every 19 seconds across the world.

Now with the availability of new systemic treatment options like hormone therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy besides chemotherapy the Breast Cancer patients in all stages of cancer are living longer with good quality of life.

Biopsy and IHC tests to identify the type of breast cancer is critical before personalised treatment is planned for every patient before surgery. More and more breast cancers are being treated with systemic therapy prior to surgery (neo adjuvant therapy) which helps in conserving breasts during surgery. A wide range of treatment options were discussed.

For the patients who were reluctant/unable to undertake Mammogram, a new AI based thermographic test was discussed. Dr Mansi’s presentation ensured that all GPs, Gynaecologists, surgeons and oncologists are empowered with pertinent information in diagnosing and guiding women towards correct timely prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.

The meeting was followed by an Interactive session. Dr Aliya, Dr Prathima and Dr Mansi answered all the queries raised by the attending doctors.

Meeting was attended by 70+ eminent obstetricians and gynaecologists, breast cancer specialists, oncologists, family physicians, emergency specialists and anaesthetists in Sultanate of Oman.

“Knowing recent advances in the Healthcare is very important not only for practicing doctors but also for general public. That exactly is the intention for arranging such International Medical Conferences” said Dr Sanjay Dalal, moderator, while concluding the meeting. He thanked the visiting team and all the doctors who attended the conference.
